The Indonesian flag carrier airline, Garuda Indonesia, will increase the frequency of its Jakarta-Haneda flights from four times weekly to daily starting March 2024. The move is driven by the growth in the number of travelers between the two countries after the pandemic.
“We are currently in the process of increasing the frequency from four times a week to every day,” said Carina Megarani, Garuda Indonesia Tokyo Deputy General Manager, in Tokyo, Japan on Thursday (Jan. 25).
She then explained that most Japanese traveling from Haneda to Jakarta are business travelers, whereas the airline flights from Narita Airport mostly cater to Japanese tourists heading to Bali island.
“Haneda-Jakarta is unique, there is daily demand for business travelers. They have to match schedules, visas, and so on. In Narita, people have planned to travel well in advance, not at the last minute,” she added.
According to Garuda Indonesia’s data until September 2023, 47,498 passengers traveled on the Narita-Denpasar route, while 33,747 passengers traveled on the Haneda-Jakarta route. To attract more customers, the airline plans to increase the frequency of the Haneda-Jakarta route to daily flights, which could result in up to a 20% increase in demand.
“Because currently, the number of Japanese people who travel has not fully recovered (to pre-pandemic level). All Indonesians have traveled as soon as the borders opened. We hope to get around 20 percent to make Indonesia a tourism choice,” she concluded.
