The 16th International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF) 2023 began on a bright note in Istanbul on Tuesday with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expressing confidence that the country’s domestic defence industry would achieve an all-time high in export revenue by the end of the year.

“We have achieved a record export value of $2.37 billion in the first six months of this year,” the President said in a video message to event exhibitors and visitors. ” Our target in 2023 is $6 billion. I believe that we will achieve our export target by the end of the year, and even exceed this figure.”

A range of defense products, including land vehicles, weapons, simulators, radars, sonars, naval platform solutions, aviation systems, and missiles, are being displayed at the event that is a veritable showcase for the progress the Turkish defence industry has made in recent years. The country’s defenve industry exports hit a record of US $4.4 billion in 2022.

Turkey is meticulously implementing 850 different projects that will leave their mark on the industry, the President said . The country attaches great importance to the development of its defense industry, “despite many obstacles, secret and open embargoes that we face,” he added. “Our industry has proven its worth with its armored vehicles, artillery, rockets, air defense systems, and all kinds of weapons and radar systems tested in conflict zones.”

Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz, who addressed IDEF’s opening ceremony, said the country hopes to achieve an export revenue target of over US$10 billion in the near future .
