Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has successfully completed the maiden flight of the first Series Production Tejas Mk-1A light fighter (LA5033).
The aircraft made its maiden flight in Bangalore and stayed in the air for 18 minutes. The aircraft was piloted by Chief Test Pilot, Gp Capt K K Venugopal (Retd).
“HAL achieved this significant production milestone with concurrent design & development amid major supply chain challenges in the global geo-political environment subsequent to the contract signature in February 2021”, said Mr. C. B. Ananthakrishnan, CMD, HAL.
The Tejas Mk1A will have an advanced AESA radar, an Electronic Warfare (EW) suite, an SDR, a datalink and improved maintenance features.
HAL received an order worth approximately USD 6 billion in February 2021 for 83 Tejas Mk-1A fighter aircraft. The order comprises 73 LCA Tejas Mk-1A fighter aircraft and 10 LCA Tejas Mk-1 Trainer aircraft. The deliveries of all 83 aircraft shall be completed by 2029.
HAL will be delivering the first 3 aircraft this year and 16 aircraft per year for the subsequent 5 years.
