South Korean defense firm Hanwha Defense signed a contract to deliver 25 Barracuda 4×4 Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) to the Indonesian National Police in 2024. The contract was signed on 15 June last month but was only disclosed this week.
“As a leading developer of armored combat vehicles in the world, Hanwha Defense is fully dedicated to meeting the needs of the Indonesian end-user under the latest contract,” said Kim Dae-young, Senior Executive Vice President of Overseas Business Center, Hanwha Defense. “In particular, Hanwha Defense will continue to offer our top-class wheeled vehicle solutions to Asian customers.”
The new deal marks the second export of the Hanwha Defense-made armored vehicle to the Indonesian Police after the first contract signed in 2004 for a batch of 20 Barracuda APC.
With the Indonesian government’s plan to relocate the Indonesian capital to East Kalimantan starting from 2024 onward, it’s highly likely that the new Barracuda APCs will be stationed there. As with the previous batch, the new vehicles will be operated by the Mobile Brigade Corps (Brimob), which is a special operations, paramilitary, and tactical unit of the Indonesian National Police.
Hanwha Defense’s Barracuda 4×4 APC is a 12.5 tonnes, four-wheeled drive armored vehicle built on a Mercedes-Benz FGA chassis. With a capacity of 15 personnel, its armor can provide protection against projectiles of up to 7.62 mm caliber. It can reach a maximum speed of 100 km/h on-road and a maximum range of over 1,000 km.
