Hanwha Systems, which is having a busy Show, has unveiled a new active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar. The radar is designed foruse on multiple platforms such as light combat aircraft (LCA), uncrewed combat aerial systems and helicopters.
The radar will feature tile type-transmitter/receiver (TR) blocks, and will be based on the AESA radar installed on the KF-21 Boromae fighter. There will be one crucial difference – the new radar is lighter. The LCA radar has around 500 TR modules, in contrast to more than 1,000 found on the original KF-21 radar.
Unlike the “brick-type” TR blocks on the KF-21, these tile TR blocks are 35% lighter and 38% thinner. The company has successfully reduced weight even further through air cooling, also ensuring affordability and quick integration of the radar onto the aircraft.
The company has successfully completed ground tests but the airborne test platform has not yet been selected.
The introduction of the AESA radar into the company’s portfolio is also with an eye on the export market. At the Paris Air Show earliee this year, the company had signed an agreement with Leonardo to develop an AESA radar jointly for LCAs, thus providing it an opportunity to penetrate the radar market via Leonardo’s platforms.
Hanwha will have competition from within the domestic market for its radar. Earlier this year, LIGNex1 unveiled its AESA radar for KAI FA-50 light fighter. The ESR-500A is poised to replace the Elta EL/M-2032 radar found on current FA-50s.
