The South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) is on track to deliver the Philippine's Navy's first guided missile corvette on schedule next year. The BRP Miguel Malvar is slated to undergo sea trials and outfitting before being delivered to the Philippine Navy in 2025. The second warship is slated for delivery in 2026.
HHI is actively supporting the Philippine Navy's efforts to modernize and reinforce Philippine naval forces through contracts to build new ships and maintain their interoperability during the ship lifecycle under the AFP Modernization Program (Horizon II). A total of ten new vessels, ranging from Frigates, Corvettes, and Off-shore Patrol Vessels from HHI will augment the Philippine fleet. HHI is eyeing further Philippines defence modernisation requirements under the Horizon 3 Modernization Programme to advance the Philippine's Navy's defence capabilities. The Republic of Korea is a major defense modernization partner to the Philippines. Earlier this year in March, the HD HHI inaugurated a naval ship engineering office in Manila, to support local support requirements. The new office will also assist HD HHI in its efforts to penetrate the SE Asia market for naval vessels.
The Philippines Department of National Defence (DND) had inked a PHP 28 Billion contract with HHI for the acquisition of two brand new corvettes for the Philippine Navy in December 2021. The launching ceremony of BRP Miguel Malvar, the first guided missile corvette took place this June in the presence of Philippine Secretary of National Defense (SND) Gilberto C. Teodoro Jr. at the HHI shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea. "We made a special effort to attend the launching of BRP Miguel Malvar to show our commitment to work with the government of the Republic of Korea towards ensuring a principled peace in the Indo-Pacific area," Teodoro Jr. said.
A state-of-the-art surface combatant measuring 118.4 meters in length and 14.9 meters in breadth, BRP Miguel Malvar will have a cruising speed of 15 knots (approx 28 km/h) and a range of 4,500 nautical miles (8,330 km). It will be equipped with advanced weapon systems such as anti-ship missiles, Vertical Launch Systems, and a 3D AESA radar. The warship is named in honour of the Philippine independence activist and revolutionary General Miguel Malvar.
HHI also recently signed a co-production agreement with the Peruvian Navy for four naval ships which will be built in state-owned shipbuilder SIMA Peru S.A. Under the terms of the contract, the Peruvian Navy will receive a 3,400-ton frigate, a 2,200-ton Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) and two 1,500-ton Landing Craft UnitS (LCU). The total contract amount is US$463 million (KRW 640.6 billion) and marks the largest naval ship order placed by a Latin American country with a Korean shipbuilder. HHI will be responsible for the design, supply of parts and provision of technological support. HHI recently also announced that it had successfully completed the basic design of the Korean Next Generation Destroyer 'KDDX'. It will be equipped with the world's first 25MW high-capacity and high-power propulsion motor.
