On the opening day of Singapore Air Show 2014, Asian Defence & Diplomacy spoke to Mark Burgess, Asia Pacific director of Defence & Space at Honeywell. “We see significant growth across all markets in the region,” he related. He said Honeywell had a favourable position given its wide aerospace portfolio. “We have a substantial manufacturing presence in the region, including an integrated supplier chain and partnerships on the commercial aerospace side.”
In terms of defence products, Honeywell specialises in power generation (engines and auxiliary power units [APU]), mechanical products, and avionics/navigation (e.g TALIN family of inertial navigation products).
Japan has historically been Honeywell’s largest regional defence customer, largely due to that country’s widespread use of US-designed aircraft and helicopters. A prime example is Honeywell’s T55 turboshaft engines that power the Boeing CH-47 Chinook. Honeywell hopes to develop further opportunities in South Korea, and one avenue of doing that could be the country’s future Light Attack Helicopter programme.
Burgess highlighted the CTS800 turboshaft engine, product of 50:50 joint development with Rolls-Royce, as a key product at the Singapore Air Show. This engine powers the AW159 Super Lynx helicopters ordered by the ROK Navy and, interestingly, the same engine is used on Japanese firm ShinMaywa’s US-2 amphibious aircraft.
Burgess revealed that Honeywell’s products, as is to be expected, are more commonly fitted on American aircraft, and less so on European ones. A notable exception to this is the Alenia Aermacchi M-346 jet trainer, which is powered by a pair of Honeywell F124-GA-200 engines. Honeywell is also ready to offer its CTS800 to Australia if the army finally gives up on the troubled engines currently fitted to its Eurocopter Tiger helicopters.
Asia makes up approximately 10% of sales revenue for Honeywell’s defence sector (excluding Foreign Military Sales destined for the region), but with the ongoing slowdown in US spending, this market will take on an even more crucial role, Burgess explained.
