IAI, Thales Sea Serpent AShM Makes Royal Navy Pitch

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Thales in the UK will offer the new Sea Serpent AShM to meet a requirement to equip the Royal Navy’s Type 23 frigates with a nextgen anti-ship and anti-surface missile.

The new missile is required to match and overmatch a rapidly expanding range and intensity of current and emerging threats facing the Royal Navy.

The IAI/THALES in the UK solution for SEA SERPENT will concentrate on utilising UK industry content and expertise for initial delivery, through-life maintenance and support, as well as future development and upgrade options, an IAI release said.

The Sea Serpent is based on IAI’s Gabriel surface-to-surface missile and will be able to attack ship and land based targets to ranges significantly in excess of 200 km. It can locate and attack targets in littoral, open-ocean and overland environments.

The new Anti-Ship Missile (AShM) makes use of an innovative RF seeker head with a sophisticated data analysis and weapon control system to provide precise target detection, discrimination and classification.

In fast-moving situations, Sea Serpent incorporates mid-course updates from real-time ISTAR feeds and the ability to re-task in flight, especially in cooperative engagements and distributed sensor-and-shooter networks.

The Sea Serpent is also touted to offer significant Military Off-the-Shelf Solution (MOTS) advantages in terms of cost, time-to-procurement, entry into operational service and risk reduction.

The new missile has been developed in parallel with similar missile systems in service with the Israeli Navy and has also been selected to provide powerful strike capabilities for Finland’s SSM2020 programme.
