The 13th edition of IMDEX Asia, now underway, has once again highlighted the importance of strengthening mutual understanding and fostering consensus amongst nations in the region, against the backdrop of increasing tensions in a globally inter-linked world.
IMDEX Asia is being held at a time of heightened global tensions even as the global economy recovers from the pandemic. Nations in the region are rushing to reequip and modernise their navies in the aftermath of Russia’s unlawful invasion of Ukraine.
IMDEX Asia has grown by leaps and bounds from its first edition held in 1997, which had 65 exhibitors, 2,500 trade visitors and participation from five navies. The ongoing show features over 200 exhibitors from 25 countries, with the organisers expecting over 11,000 visitors over the course of the show.
The show was inaugurated by Singapore’s Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen. The minister stated that IMDEX Asia provides an important platform to maintain and hopefully enhance regional stability and security. “That alone provides sufficient cause for government leaders and military commanders to be here. Because, in my mind, the top priority for all government leaders, at least in the next decade, if not longer, is to avoid a physical conflict in Asia.”
The opening ceremony featured 47 delegations, including 22 Navy Chiefs, Director-General of Coast-Guards and Heads of Maritime Law Enforcement Agencies from 38 countries.
