Aircraft from countries such as the US, Canada, Russia, China and host country Mexico are on display at the third edition of Mexico’s Aerospace Fair.
The standouts among the aircraft on display are the A-10 Thunderbolt of the United States Air Force, the Boeing C-17 Globemaster heavy military transport aircraft of the Canadian Air Force, China’s Wing Loong combat Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), the Embraer EMB 314 Super Tucano, and the Russian-made Beriev 200 aircraft which is designed for fighting forest fires. Also, being displayed is the under-development Pegasus P-400T, a turboprop by Oaxaca Aerospace, a Mexican firm. The aircraft was first unveiled at the last edition of the aero- space fair in 2017.
Among the other aircraft in static display or in flight at the event are F-5F and Sikorsky UH-60 M of the Mexican Air Force, a C-130 Hercules of the USAF, a Cessna 208 Caravan, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, an EC-725 Cougar and a Russian Mi-17.
The A-10 Thunderbolt, which has been nicknamed the “Warthog” for its aggressive looks, is the US Air Force’s primary low-altitude close air support aircraft. Best known for its GAU-8 Avenger 30mm gat- ling gun mounted on the nose, the aircraft boasts of excellent maneuverability at low air speeds and altitude. It can loiter near battle areas for extended periods of time and operate in low ceiling and visibility conditions. The high-wing, four-engine, T-tailed C-17 Globemaster military trans- port aircraft can carry large equipment, supplies and troops directly to small air- fields in harsh terrain. The first aircraft was delivered to the USAF in 1993.
The Wing Loong is a Medium-Altitude Long-Endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), developed by the Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group. It is designed for use as a surveillance and aerial recon- naissance platform and can also be fitted with air-to-surface weapons for use in an unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) role. Bearing a close resemblance in looks to US-made GA-ASI Predator and the Reaper, the UAV has been in high demand in the Middle East and other regions.
