India on Monday successfully carried out the first flight test of intercontinental ballistic missile Agni-5 with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle or MIRV technology, aimed at strengthening its nuclear deterrence to counter potential threats from the eastern frontiers.
The indigenously-developed highly advanced weapons system called Mission Divyastra, deploys the MIRV technology, which ensures that the warhead can split into multiple re-entry vehicles to deliver a precise and targeted attack.
"What makes the system unique is that a single missile would be capable of delivering multiple warheads," said an official at India's Defence Research and Development Organization that developed the missile for over a decade.
The system is equipped with homegrown avionics systems and high accuracy sensor packages, which ensured that the re-entry vehicles reached the target points within the desired precision, the DRDO official said.
With Monday's flight test, India has joined a select group of nations including the United States, United Kingdom, China, Russia and France, to possess the high technology MIRV technology.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the DRDO scientists for successfully conducting the maiden flight test.
"Proud of our DRDO scientists for Mission Divyastra, the first flight test of indigenously developed Agni-5 missile with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology," PM Modi posted on X, formerly Twitter.
Space experts say the flight test shows India's advancing technological prowess and a significant milestone in its strategic capabilities.
It would alter India's geopolitic position, bringing almost the entire Asia, including the northernmost part of China, as well as some regions in Europe under its striking range. Agni-5 is also the first missile to be launched at its maximum operational range, which exceeds 5,000 kilometers - the farthest range in the history of India's weapons program, they said.
