Our Bureau - : Dec 18, 2024 - : 10:53 pm

Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of Naval Staff of the Indian Navy, met with Admiral Muhammad Ali, Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy, and Indonesian Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin to explore collaboration opportunities related to BrahMos missile technology. These discussions took place during Admiral Tripathi’s recent visit to Jakarta.

During his meeting with Admiral Ali at the Indonesian Navy Headquarters in Cilangkap, discussions included the possibility of collaborating on defence technology, notably the BrahMos missile. However, Admiral Ali declined to speculate on the procurement of BrahMos missiles, stating that such decisions are managed by the Indonesian Ministry of Defence.

“The matter of defence equipment concerning the BrahMos missile is a potential option. Nevertheless, any decision would be made by the Ministry of Defence,” Admiral Ali stated when addressing media questions as quoted by the Indonesian news agency, Antara, on Wednesday (Dec. 17).

Admiral Ali also mentioned that the discussions with Admiral Tripathi primarily focused on strengthening cooperation between the Indonesian and Indian navies. This includes ongoing joint patrols in border areas and participation in joint exercises on both bilateral and multilateral levels.

Admiral Tripathi also met Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, and the discussions centred on strengthening defence collaboration, with an emphasis on joint naval exercises.

The Indonesian Ministry of Defence released an official statement noting these discussions, highlighting the potential for joint operations and collaboration between the navies.

Admiral Tripathi informed Defence Minister Sjafrie about India’s progress in developing various domestic defence technologies. Sjafrie recognised India’s technological advancements and showed interest in collaborating to boost Indonesia’s domestic defence technology capabilities.

“The Defence Minister acknowledges the significant progress in Indian technology and expressed a strong interest in collaborating with India, especially in defence technology development,” said Brigadier General Frega F. Wenas Inkiriwang, Head of the Defence Information Bureau.

Defence Minister Sjafrie also mentioned key areas of cooperation on his social media account, which included joint exercises, ship development initiatives, and maritime security operations. He highlighted that collaboration on advanced technologies, such as the BrahMos missile, presented an opportunity for Indonesia to advance its technological capabilities.

“Advanced technology collaboration like BrahMos also stands out, while providing an opportunity for Indonesia to learn and grow,” Sjafrie said.
