India Needs 100 Satellites To Man Indian Ocean

: Dec 6, 2013 - : 8:32 am

New Delhi: India should have more than 100 satellites to safeguard the Indian waters and counter Chinese surveillance in the region, a senior scientist says.
As many as 19 Chinese surveillance satellites are currently monitoring the Indian Ocean region, one of the world’s most strategic areas and India “needs to create capabilities to neutralize the information that is being transmitted through these satellites, says Avinash Chander, director general of the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
For this, India should have 80-100 ready-to-use satellites, which can be deployed in formation within hours or in a day.
“The West is, of course, more advanced. So, it is time to revisit our surveillance strategies,” Chander adds.
Besides, maritime area awareness, providing seamless cover to domain that demands intelligent synergy among many platforms like unmanned aerial vehicles, space-based indigenous navigational systems and communication satellites for real-time multi-mode information are the need of the hour.
“India needs to deploy deep-sea sonar that operates in extreme ocean depths, in the so-called deep sound channel, to detect quiet enemy submarines from thousands of miles,” the DRDO chief says.
Underwater sensors that make possible measurements of physical, chemical and biological processes are also required to be developed.
“The sensor networks will be used for monitoring daily ocean life, emergency events for military purposes and environmental research in future,” he says.
The DRDO is presently funding research in underwater technologies for manpower development though naval research boards and academic institutions.
“We need to develop technologies to monitor our waters in all the three dimensions,” Chander says.
