India Plans to Induct Agni-V in 2015

: Feb 10, 2014 - : 9:19 am

India plans to induct the Agni-V ballistic missile into the country’s armed forces by next year, after completion of development trials.

The Agni-V, an intercontinental, nuclear-tipped, three-stage ballistic, has already been successfully test-fired twice from a mobile launcher at Launch Complex 4 of the Integrated Test Range in the eastern state of Odisha.

“It will take two or three more trials for the completion of the development trials,” Avinash Chander, head of India’s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) says.

The trials are expected be completed this year following which the missile will be ready for induction into the military forces.

“We are going to do the trials from canisters this year,” Chander says.

Once provided with the canister-thrust capability, Agni-V will become a quick reaction stop-and-launch system. “It will impart high operational flexibility to the user,” the DRDO official adds.

The indigenously developed missile, which cost the DRDO 2.5 billion rupees ($48.4 million) to develop, can hit a target up to 5,000 km (3,100 mi.) away.

The 17.5 meters (57 ft.) tall with a launch weight of 50 tons, is powered by solid-rocket propellants, and can be transported by road.

The Agni-V missile, unlike others in the series, is the most advanced with new technologies in terms of navigation, warhead and engine.

Agni, meaning fire in Hindi and Sanskrit, is a rocket family India has tested since 2002.

India has tested several missiles in the past few years as part of its missile program, which began in the 1960s.
