Indian Navy Wants Third Aircraft Carrier Soon

: Dec 30, 2013 - : 7:54 am

India plans to go in for a third aircraft carrier although INS Vikramaditya has been inducted into the Indian Navy.
“One more Aircraft Carrier, to be named INS Vikrant, is currently under construction at  Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), Kochi,” Defense Minister A.K. Antony said.
The oldest carrier INS Viraat would be operational in accordance with the stipulated operational cycle. No authentic information is available.
The Viraat, the only operational carrier with the navy currently, is planned to be in service till 2017 when the Vikrant is scheduled for commissioning.
The Vikrant was floated out of the dry dock in Kochi in August this year.
India acquired its first carrier, INS Vikrant, as early as 1961 and operated it till the late 1990s alongside another British-origin carrier, INS Viraat, which was inducted in 1987.
The Indian Navy desires to have three operational carriers in its fleet but the only one in use currently, the INS Viraat, is rusting away faster than it would like.
“The INS Viraat is ‘long in the tooth’ (outdated and too expensive to maintain),” the chief of naval staff, Admiral D.K. Joshi, said.
Naval headquarters is gradually beginning to take the view that the ship will have to be decommissioned before the planned end of its extended tenure in service.
Aircraft carrier Vikramaditya has now been inducted into the Indian Navy as a work-in-progress. It is meant to bridge the operational gap between the retirement of Viraat, already a spent force and on its last lap, and the induction of the indigenous carrier, Vikrant, to be ready hopefully by 2018.
The Indian Navy is engaged in a continuous evaluation of the maritime security environment around our Maritime Areas of interest to meet any challenges that the country may encounter, the minister said.
