The Indian Air Force (IAF) has brought its ‘Sarang’ (Peacock in Hindi) Helicopter Display Team to the Singapore Airshow. This is the maiden appearance of the Indian helicopter display team at the Singapore Airshow. The IAF has sent a team of 71 personnel and the Sarang will perform a flying display with five helicopters. The team arrived in Singapore on an IAF C-17 Globemaster III heavy-lift transport aircraft.

The Sarang Helicopter Display Team was formed in 2003 and it is noteworthy that their very first International public performance was in 2004, at the Asian Aerospace Show in Singapore. Initially formed and raised as a three-helicopter formation, the Sarang team now boasts of a five-helicopter display and has performed over 1200 displays at more than 385 venues all around the globe.

The Sarang team operates the indigenously developed ‘Dhruv’ 5-tonne utility helicopter which was designed and developed by state-owned airframer Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The Dhruv helicopter features rigid, hinge-less rotors making it highly maneuverable and the variant flown by the Sarang team is the Dhruv Mk-I, which is the oldest version of the helicopter and is powered by twin Safran Helicopter Engines TMB-333 B2 engines delivering 825kW each. The other variants of the Dhruv are the Mk-II, Mk-III, Mk-IV, and Mk-III maritime.
