The Indonesian Air Force (TNI Angkatan Udara / TNI AU) received its fifth and final C-130J Super Hercules aircraft at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base (AFB) today. This delivery marks the completion of the military freighter aircraft that Indonesia ordered from the United States in 2019.
Flying directly from Lockheed Martin’s Marietta facility in Georgia, United States, on May 10th, the aircraft covered approximately 18,000 km before landing in Jakarta. Its journey included four stops at San Diego, Honolulu, Kwajalein, and Guam.
Bearing a temporary US registration number of N51045, this C-130J aircraft will soon be inducted into TNI-AU’s service under its official registration number of A-1342. It will join four other Super Hercules in the Indonesian Air Force’s 31st Airlift Squadron which were previously delivered between February and August 2023, and in January this year.
The C-130J Super Hercules, which took its first flight in 1999, is the latest development of the C-130-series aircraft first produced in 1954. The J-version boasts advancements such as upgraded Rolls-Royce AE 2100D3 turboprop engines, six-bladed composite propellers, digital avionics, and Head-Up Displays (HUDs) for enhanced pilot and co-pilot control and awareness.
These technological upgrades translate into increased operational efficiencies, reducing the crew requirement from five in older versions to three. Additionally, improvements in maximum speed, ceiling height, maximum range, and take-off distance further enhance the aircraft's performance capabilities.
With a maximum speed of 670 km/h, a cruise speed of 644 km/h, and a flight ceiling of 26,000 ft (8,000 meters), the C-130J boasts a maximum range of 4,425 km with a 20-ton payload. Furthermore, its flexible configuration allows for the transportation of up to 128 fully equipped troops or 92 paratroopers.
Including this latest delivery, the Indonesian Air Force now has around 28 C-130 aircraft in its inventory.
