The Indonesian Army (TNI-AD) has begun field testing a new electric motorbike prototype in Bandung, West Java. Made by PT Eltran Indonesia, a subsidiary of state-owned PT LEN Industri, the Electric Tactical (E-Tactical) motorbike prototype was approved by the Indonesian Ministry of Defense on Thursday (Sept. 15).
"Today we must be proud because we are historical actors in the process of electric motorbike deployment. In addition, it will be our legacy in the future," said Julexi Tambayong, Chief of the R&D Agency of the Indonesian Ministry of Defense (Balitbang Kemhan) during the E-Tactical bike prototype certification event.
"This is our pioneering effort. We are open to all inputs, especially from users. So that later there is no reason to reject it, especially when used in operational tasks," he added.
“Hopefully the process can run smoothly and get full support from all parties. Moreover, this is to fulfill the needs of state defense equipment and strengthen the national defense system,” said Dewayana Agung Nugroho, CEO of PT Eltran Indonesia.
For its part, TNI-AD plans to equip all its Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) supervising village defense and security (Babinsa) with motorbikes. Initially, the bikes will be Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) or conventional motorbikes, followed by a mix of ICE and electric bikes later, to all-electric E-Tactical bikes in the future.
“This is just the beginning because later we will give all Babinsa motorbikes. Later on, we plan to make the motorbike domestically in Indonesia by Pindad and PT Len under the defense industry holding, Defend ID,” wrote Prabowo Subianto, the Indonesian Defense Minister in his official statement on Wednesday (Sept. 14).
The E-Tactical prototype is a cross-country electric motorbike with either a 2 kW or 10 kW battery variant. A 3 kW battery variant is specifically developed for the “silent” version intended for the special military operation. It can be equipped with PT Len’s LenSTRAD-M5 tactical radio and Battlefield Management System (BMS) for voice and data communication.
With a maximum speed of around 120 km/h on-road, the E-Tactical bike has a maximum range on a full charge between 80 to 115 km depending on the battery. The bike can be recharged from empty to full in two hours with a 1,200-watt fast charging station.
