Iran has unveiled a new strategic UAV that it says is the biggest drone yet to be developed in the country, capable of staying aloft for up to 30 hours.

Iranian Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan says the reconnaissance and combat drone Fotros has a range of 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles). That would cover much of the Middle East including Israel.

The official IRNA news agency quoted Dehghan as saying Monday, November 18, that Iranian scientists designed and developed the drone.

“The Fotros drone has an operational range of 2,000 kilometers and can fly at an altitude of 25,000 feet, with a flight time of 16 to 30 hours,” Dehgan said, adding the new drone could carry out reconnaissance missions or launch air-to-surface missile strikes.

The minister went on to add that “Fotros” will be used for surveillance of sea and land borders, oil and gas pipelines, as well as monitoring of stories-earthquake disaster areas.
