The Italian Navy’s Carrier Strike Group had a stopover in Manila earlier this month, focused on the humanitarian initiative organised in collaboration with Smile House Fondazione ETS. The Italian aircraft carrier and frigate, ITS Cavour and ITS Alpino, arrived in Manila for a goodwill visit in September which also in involved research through sharing of best practices with the Philippine Navy.

“It is always a pleasure for the Philippine Navy to host other like-minded navies and other like-minded Armed Forces who are here for a visit. We look forward to your visits again and our future cooperation with the Italian Navy,” Philippine Naval Reserve Command Deputy Commander, Commo. Lemuel Espartinez said.

On this occasion, aircraft carrier Cavour – deployed in the Indo-Pacific with Frigate ITS Alpino and Multipurpose Combat Ship ITS Montecuccoli – highlighted its capacity to provide support to the population thanks to its modern hospital area, where volunteer surgeons from the Smile House Fondazione ETS led by professor Domenico Scopelliti, with the support of Italian Navy medical personnel, performed 7 maxillofacial and reconstructive surgical interventions on young patients with complex malformations.

During the stopover in Manila – begun with the handing-over of ITS Alpino command, between commander Salvatore Santangelo and commander Davide Cervellera –  the Italian Defence Industries Forum was also held on the initiative of the Secretariat General of Defence / National Armaments Directorate and of the Federation of the Italian Companies for Aerospace, Defence and Security (AIAD), introduced by Davide Giglio, Ambassador of Italy to the Philippines, and open to the participation of Philippine defence industries.
