Italy Buys 6 Piaggio P180 for Armed Forces

Italy has formalised an order for six Piaggio Aerospace P180 Avanti EVO turboprops for the country’s armed forces.

The Italian Minister of Defence, Lorenzo Guerini, signed a decree on Oct 1 for the purchase of the aircraft worth a total amount of 171 million euros. The deal also finances the supply of a P.180 full flight simulator and the extension of the maintenance contract for the “Viper” engines, which are fitted also on the aircraft of the National Aerobatic Team (“Frecce Tricolori”).

“Fulfilling the Government’s commitment to supporting Piaggio Aerospace’s turnaround, this remarkable order further enhances the value of the Company, which is now close to finding a new owner”, commented Piaggio Aerospace’s Extraordinary Commissioner, Vincenzo Nicastro. “Notably, these six new aircraft bring the total order portfolio of the P.180, including private customers, to 20 units”.

According to the company, Avanti EVO is the fastest twin turboprop ever made. “Avanti EVO achieves greater speed without compromising operating costs, running at up to 30 per cent less than a jet of the same size and boasting a support program that keeps maintenance costs at a rate guaranteed by the manufacturer,” the company says.
