ITP Aero Achieves EASA Certification for 3D-Printed Aeroengine Component

Our Bureau - : Jul 23, 2024 - : 2:22 am

ITP Aero has become the first aeroengine design and manufacturing company to receive Design Organisation Approval (DOA) from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and Production Organisation Approval (POA) from the Spanish Air Security Agency (AESA) for structural components produced using additive manufacturing technology. The certified components are TP400 vanes for the rear engine structure.

“We are extremely proud to be the first aeroengine company to obtain EASA certification for an additive manufactured structural component. Advanced manufacturing technologies play a key role in our commitment to a more sustainable aviation sector and these milestones bring us one step closer to achieving net zero by 2050,” said Erlantz Cristóbal, CTO of ITP Aero.

Utilising its proprietary technological expertise, ITP Aero has successfully established and certified its own additive manufacturing standards and specifications for high-temperature aviation engine components. The company operates a specialised additive manufacturing cell and has a dedicated team of multidisciplinary professionals focused on this production method at its Zamudio headquarters in Spain.

ITP Aero’s upcoming R&D centre, “ADMIRE,” currently under construction in Zamudio with an EUR 24 million investment, will focus on digital and advanced manufacturing technologies, including additive manufacturing, to address the evolving needs of the aeronautical engine market and support ITP Aero’s sustainability goals.

The additive manufacturing technique used for these components is selective laser fusion, also known as industrial 3D printing. This process involves digitally segmenting the 3D model of the component into individual layers, then using a laser to melt powdered nickel superalloy and build the component layer by layer. This method allows for the production of complex geometric components while minimising the use of raw materials and energy.
