A UK-Japan government-to-government cooperation programme with Mitsubishi Electric Company (MELCO) for the Joint New Air-to-Air Missile (JNAAM) could result in the integration of a MELCO Active Electronically Steered Array (AESA) seeker onto MBDA’s Meteor long-range beyond visual range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM). An MBDA spokesperson confirmed to Daily News that MBDA is exploring the feasibility of integrating a MELCO AESA seeker onto the Meteor missile. “MBDA’s aspiration is to work with Japanese industry to co-develop effectors of the future for platforms that service the needs of Europe, Japan and the wider export market,” the spokesperson added.
MBDA is currently working with BAE Systems and Lockheed Martin to integrate the Meteor missile onto the F-35. As an operator of the F-35, Japan would be able to select Meteor for Japan Air Self Defence Force (JASDF) aircraft once integrated. MBDA’s Meteor has revolutionized air-to-air combat in the 21st century with the largest No Escape Zone of any air-to-air missile system, several times greater than current air-to air missiles. The Meteor’s network-enabled capability and effective operation in all environments will enhance air superiority and total destruction of a combat air threat.
MBDA is also eyeing opportunities as part of the tri-nation Global Combat Aircraft Programme (GCAP). MBDA is present at the DSEI Japan GCAP stand, demonstrating its work with the multi-national GCAP team that ensures the next generation platform can seamlessly integrate the next generation of effectors. “MBDA’s aspirations are wider
than GCAP and its effectors; we endeavor to be Japan’s industrial partner of choice in the effector domain across all land, sea and air platforms servicing the needs of Japan’s Self Defense Forces,” the spokesperson said. MBDA is a key industrial partner on the GCAP.
“We are working with the multi-national industrial GCAP team to ensure that the next-generation platform can seamlessly integrate the next-generation of effectors that have been co-developed by MBDA and Japanese industry,” the spokesperson added.
