Following a note exchange between Japan's Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko and her Indonesian counterpart Retno Marsudi in Tokyo in December last year, the Japanese ambassador for Indonesia, Masaki Yasushi, has confirmed that the new ship to be granted to the Indonesian Coast Guard (Badan Keamanan Laut / Bakamla) will be delivered to Indonesia in the next two or three years.
Japan will also aid in transferring the technology the country has imbued in the ship.
“We’re building a new one and will hand it over to Bakamla [in the next two or three years],” he said in Jakarta on Monday (Mar. 25). “Not only will we donate the ship, but we will also transfer the technology,” he added according to CNN Indonesia on Sunday (Mar. 31).
During the Japan-Indonesia summit meeting in Tokyo on 16 December 2023, both countries agreed to increase cooperation to strengthen the Indonesian Coast Guard, aiming to improve the agency's capacity to supervise and coordinate domestic maritime-related agencies. This resulted in Japan’s government granting aid to the agency in the form of a new “large patrol vessel” worth up to 9.053 billion Japanese Yen or around USD59.7 million.
This came after the East Asian country donated two monitoring vessels to the Indonesian Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (Kementerian Kelautan dan Perikanan / KKP). Launched in the 1990s, both ships were refurbished and upgraded in Japan before being transferred to Indonesia in June and September last year.
While no statement has been released regarding the ship’s specifics in the new grant, there are some indications that it will have an overall length of between 95-96 metres, a 12-metre beam, and a displacement of around 2,000 tonnes. These basic specifications will put it on par with the Hida-class patrol ships currently serving in the Japan Coast Guard.
