Jordan will soon start acquiring Lockheed Martin-made Guided Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (GMLRS) from the United States.
Under a Foreign Military Sale (FMS), estimated to be around US$70 million, Jordan will buy 114 GMLRS Unitary High Explosive (HE) Tri-Mode Fuze (GMLRS-U) (M31) Rockets; and a similar number of Reduced Range Practice Rockets (RRPR).
These weapons will provide Jordan with a long-range precision artillery support capability that will significantly improve U.S.-Jordan interoperability and provide for the defence of vital installations. The combat-proven Guided MLRS Unitary round integrates a 200-pound unitary warhead, providing precision strike for point targets. The Unitary variant has a range exceeding 70 kilometers.
Other Variants
Lockheed Martin has produced more than 60,000 GMLRS rounds and is under contract to produce more than 9,000 new GMLRS Unitary and alternative-warhead (AW) rockets including integrated logistics support for the U.S. Army and international customers.
The Guided MLRS AW round was the first munition developed to service area targets without the effects of unexploded ordnance, complying with the U.S. Department of Defense cluster munitions policy and international policies. The AW variant has a range exceeding 70 kilometers and delivers a 200-pound class fragmenting warhead.
A new developmental variation of the Guided MLRS family, Extended Range GMLRS offers an extended range out to 150 kilometers in all weather conditions.
Early October, Lockheed Martin successfully demonstrated its next-generation ER GMLRS in a test. The round was fired from the U.S. Army’s HIMARS launcher and met all success criteria in a short-range test flight approximately 59 kilometers to the target area.
“Our next-generation GMLRS provides versatility for commanders, offering a choice of munitions at longer distances with the same reliability and precision the system is known for,” said Jay Price, vice president of Precision Fires at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. “This success advances the ER GMLRS closer to production as we complete the final phase of the development program.”
ER GMLRS shares significant commonality with legacy Guided MLRS, and is deployable by HIMARS and the MLRS M270 family of launchers. The rounds incorporate a larger motor and have enhanced maneuverability due to tail-driven control.
Testing confirmed flight trajectory, range and accuracy from launch to impact, as well as warhead lethality, HIMARS integration and overall missile performance. The rocket pod also underwent Stockpile to Target Sequence (STS) testing prior to launch. This effort simulates cumulative effects the ER GMLRS will meet in the field between factory and launch for the life of the system and demonstrates durability of the missile and launch pod container.
