KNDS Opens Subsidiary in Ukraine

Our Bureau - : Oct 1, 2024 - : 8:12 pm

The Franco-German defence group KNDS, a key partner of the Ukrainian land forces, has established a subsidiary in Kyiv. The new entity, KNDS Ukraine LLC, will facilitate collaboration between Ukrainian government bodies, the country’s defence industry, and KNDS. This move is aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s military capabilities, particularly in the maintenance and production of defence equipment.

KNDS has around 800 systems either deployed or under contract with Ukraine, along with significant deliveries of ammunition. The company’s systems include Leopard 1 and 2 main battle tanks, the CAESAR artillery gun, the AMX-10 RC, the PzH 2000 armoured howitzer, and the Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft gun. By establishing KNDS Ukraine LLC, the company aims to enable the Ukrainian defence industry to undertake maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) operations for these systems. This will enhance the availability and readiness of these weapons for combat.

In addition to MRO activities, KNDS and the Ukrainian defence industry plan to jointly produce 155 mm artillery ammunition in Ukraine. The two sides will also manufacture spare parts using advanced manufacturing technologies, contributing to the self-sufficiency of Ukraine’s defence sector.

The founding of KNDS Ukraine LLC follows a Franco-German government initiative that was outlined on 22 March 2024 by French Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu and German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius in Berlin. The initiative underscores the close military and industrial cooperation between the two countries and their commitment to supporting Ukraine.

KNDS was formed through the merger of Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) of Germany and Nexter of France, two leading manufacturers of military land systems in Europe. The group employs around 9,500 people and reported a turnover of EUR 3.3 billion in 2023, with an order backlog of EUR 16 billion and incoming orders valued at EUR 7.8 billion. Its product range includes main battle tanks, armoured vehicles, artillery systems, ammunition, military bridges, and a variety of military support services.

KNDS, with its headquarters in Amsterdam, continues to play a central role in the European defence sector, meeting the needs of national armies and offering long-term support to its international clients, including Ukraine.
