Kongsberg Signs A Contract With Australia For NSM Capability

Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (Kongsberg) has signed an initial contract valued at NOK 489 (around USD48.4 million) with Australia for Naval Strike Missile (NSM) capability, according to a press release from the company on 6 July. The order income is booked in the second quarter of 2022.

“Signing this initial contract to commence the acquisition of an Australian NSM capability is a very important milestone. This is a clear demonstration of Kongsberg’s commitment to the accelerated delivery of NSM to the Royal Australian Navy to meet their requirements,” said Executive Vice President Missile Systems in Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace, Øyvind Kolset.

The NSM is a fifth-generation, long-range, precision strike anti-ship and land-attack missile designed to defeat heavily protected targets in contested environments. With a length of 3.95 meters and a weight of 410 kg, the missile carries a 125 kg of High Explosive (HE) blast fragmentation warhead.

The missile is propelled with a dual propulsion system: A solid rocket motor for the initial launch, and a turbojet engine for the cruise at high subsonic speed. It has a maximum range of more than 185 km and has a programmable flight profile. It has a multitude of guidance systems to ensure accuracy in contested environments.
