Korean Air Completes First Comprehensive UAM Demo

Korean Air, alongside Hyundai Motor Company, Korea Telecom (KT), Incheon International Airport Corporation (IIAC), and Hyundai Engineering & Construction, has concluded a comprehensive urban air mobility (UAM) operations demonstration, marking a milestone in the Korean Urban Air Mobility (K-UAM) Grand Challenge’s initial phase. This demonstration took place over five weeks running from 11 March to 19 April 2024 at the Goheung Aviation Test Center in South Jeolla Province.

Utilizing a 5G aviation communication network, the airline verified its comprehensive urban air mobility (UAM) system, connecting electric vertical take-off and landing (e-VTOL) aircraft with UAM operating systems. Drawing on the airline’s operational experience, Korean Air exhibited the reliability and effectiveness of its in-house developed proprietary UAM Operation Control System and Traffic Management System, ensuring safe and efficient urban air travel.

Throughout the demonstration, Korean Air conducted ten scenarios, encompassing both routine and exceptional situations, to assess the functionality and performance of the operating systems. The data collected from these scenarios will undergo analysis to refine the systems and ensure the safety of UAM operations in densely populated urban areas.

Having signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT), Incheon International Airport Corporation, and the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) on February 22, 2023, the airline remains committed to exploring various UAM initiatives. It aims to validate and improve government-established UAM concepts and procedures, contributing to the development of the UAM ecosystem in Korea.
