The Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL) recently commissioned KRI Teluk Calang (524), its latest Teluk Bintuni-class “Landing Ship, Tank” or LST.

“Today KRI Teluk Calang officially enters the ranks of the Indonesian Navy and will be assigned to strengthen the (Navy’s) Military Seaborne Unit 1 Jakarta,” said TNI-AL Chief, Admiral Yudo Margono during the commissioning ceremony at Tanjung Priok harbor, Jakarta, on Monday (Aug. 8).

Named after a bay located in Indonesia’s Westernmost province, Aceh, KRI Teluk Calang (524) is the ninth of twelve domestically designed and built Teluk Bintuni-class LSTs that TNI-AL is planning to acquire. It is also the fifth ship of its class built by the original designer, PT Daya Radar Utama (DRU) shipyard, whereas four others were built by two other Indonesian companies.

Ordered in January 2017 as part of a three-ship contract, KRI Teluk Calang (524) was launched in August 2019. The ship then underwent a series of system fittings and trials before being formally accepted into TNI-AL’s service on Monday this week.

KRI Teluk Calang (524) has a displacement of 4,508 tonnes, length of 120 meters, 18 meters beam, and 3 meters draft under full load. Powered with two 3,285 kW (4,405 hp) diesel engines, the ship has a maximum speed of 16 knots, with a maximum range of about 7,200 nautical miles or about 13,300 km under its economical cruising speed of 13 knots.

The ship has a 20-day endurance for its complement of 120 crews and is equipped with a helipad and a hangar for two medium-sized helicopters. It also has the capacity to transport 361 fully equipped troops, or ten Main Battle Tanks (MBTs). The ship is lightly armed with two Bofors 40 mm cannons, and two 12.7 mm caliber heavy machine guns.
