L3Harris Technologies has achieved Safety of Flight (SOF) qualification for its Viper Shield all-digital electronic warfare (EW) system, designed for F-16 fighter jets. The system will be supplied to F-16 fleets for six international partners.
The Viper Shield system successfully underwent a range of environmental and electrical tests, including assessments of structural integrity, thermal and electrical safety, and aircraft aerodynamics. It demonstrated its ability to withstand both normal and extreme flight manoeuvres, proving its safety, reliability, and effectiveness.
Ed Zoiss, President of Space and Airborne Systems at L3Harris, commented, “Completing the comprehensive SOF evaluation is a significant milestone for Viper Shield and for our growing list of global customers. This critical electronic warfare system will begin flight testing soon, and we will start delivering the capability in late 2025.”
The Viper Shield system provides aircrews and commanders with enhanced situational awareness of the electronic environment, enabling them to detect, locate, and counter threats to improve survivability and effectiveness in complex scenarios. It is the only advanced EW solution in active production for international F-16 users. Designed with future upgrades in mind, the system is adaptable to changing electromagnetic spectrum conditions.
