LATAM Expands Fleet with Order for 10 Boeing 787 Dreamliners

Boeing and LATAM Airlines Group have announced that the group will purchase 10 Boeing 787 Dreamliner jets, with an option to acquire an additional five. This acquisition will strengthen LATAM’s existing fleet of 787-8 and 787-9 models, currently totalling 37 aircraft, and expand it to 52 by 2030. The order highlights the airline’s commitment to a modern, fuel-efficient fleet aimed at both expanding capacity on popular routes and enabling new international routes, including the recently launched direct service to Sydney.

“The Boeing 787 is a much more efficient aircraft, allowing us to continue growing sustainably while reducing our carbon footprint as we drive the growth of our operations. This order will enable us to receive at least two aircraft of this model each year from 2025 until the end of the decade,” said Ramiro Alfonsín, Chief Financial Officer of the LATAM Airlines Group.

Boeing highlights the environmental advantages of the 787 series, stating that the jets use 25% less fuel than the models they replace. The larger 787-9 variant offers additional range and capacity, enhancing LATAM’s ability to increase both passenger and cargo capacity across its routes.

“We appreciate LATAM’s continued confidence in the 787 Dreamliner family to further expand its international network from hubs in Santiago, Sao Paulo and Lima,” said Mike Wilson, Boeing vice president of Commercial Sales for Latin America and the Caribbean. “As demand for air travel rises, we will continue to support LATAM’s growth strategy and goal of connecting Latin America with the world.”

Boeing’s market forecast for 2024 anticipates significant growth in Latin America, with air travel expected to more than double over the next 20 years, averaging a 5% annual increase. This expansion suggests that the regional fleet could reach over 3,000 aircraft by 2043, with nearly 2,300 new aircraft deliveries projected for the period.
