Leonardo is eyeing interest in the region for potential customers for its ULISSES (Ultra Light SonicS Enhanced System).
The new lightweight modular Sonics System offers an affordable solution for advanced Anti Submarine Warfare (ASW) operations. A company official told Daily News, that the ULISSES is a game changer when it comes to ASW in Littoral environments. ULISSES has now been in service for nearly two years, though company officials declined to provide details of the operator.
The company is now promoting the ULISSES, which is suitable for installation on small platforms both manned and unmanned (UAV, USV, RHIB) while remaining backwards compatible with dipping Sonar Sub-Systems, typically installed on medium/heavy class helicopters.
ULISSES implements multistatic capabilities -Sonobuoys/Sonobuoys, Sonobuoys/Dipping Sonar, Sonobuoys/Towed Array- as well as concurrent processing on a large sonobuoys inventory, including the latest special purpose sonobuoys developed to detect low noise targets.
The Sonobuoys can be both Active and/or passive. Due to the ULISSES’ cutting edge system architecture, its unmanned version is composed by a single box, which weighs about 11kg.
The ULISSES system, in its full version, is composed of a Sonobuoy Processor and is able to process up to 64 sonobuoys; a VHF receiver; a Common Function Transmitter; VHF/UHF Antennas. ULISSES supports a variety of sonobuoys including but not limited to: LOFAR, WIDEBAND LOFAR, DIFAR, VLAD, BATHY, HIDAR, ALFEA, CAMBS, LFA, ANM, DICASS.
The sonobuoys and antennas can be provided directly by the Customer or optionally provided by Leonardo. The ULISSES is also ITAR free as it is completely manufactured in Italy.
