Lilium to Launch U.S. Hub for Flying Taxis in Orlando

: Nov 17, 2020 - : 3:46 am

Munich-based Lilium, which specializes in all-electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, has chosen Orlando for Vertiport, a  hub for flying taxis in the U.S. Lilium’s first hub will be in Germany.

The company will partner with the Tavistock Development Company (Tavistock) and Orlando, Florida, to create the first hub location for a high-speed electric air mobility network in the USA. The plan is to have the US. transportation network ready for commercial flights by 2025.

“We are thrilled to partner with Tavistock and build the first stretch of Florida’s high-speed electric transportation network with Central Florida at its core,” said Dr. Remo Gerber, Chief Operating Officer, Lilium. ” It shows that regional high-speed air mobility can be built by private initiative and give communities such as Lake Nona, which can also serve Orlando and arrivals from its international airport, the ability to determine themselves whether they want a link into a high-speed transportation network.”

According to Gerber,  the cost of using the service would be e comparable to flying “business class.”  “Over time, we are very committed on creating a more affordable mode of transportation,” he said in a recent virtual press conference. “We sometimes even go as far as to say five to 10 years post-launch, it is entirely conceivable it might actually come down to a price point similar to driving your own car.”

According to Lilium, its five-seater all-electric Lilium Jet is designed to reach speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour, or or 186 miles per hour. The company plans to have a network of air taxis in various cities, with an app to hail the vehicles in similar fashion to Uber.
