Major Korean Air 777X Order Likely at Show

Boeing aircraft will be conspicuous by their near-total absence from the show, but the American OEM is expected to walk away from the upcoming Farnborough Airshow with a major order.

According to Reuters., Boeing is close to signing an order with Korean Air for up to 30 Boeing 777X aircraft and announce it at the Show. The deal is reported to be worth about US$4-6 billion.

It may be recalled that South Korea’s largest carrier had in March placed an order of 33 A350 jets from Airbus in March. Shortely after the order, there were reports that the carrier was also discussing a new Boeing order focused on the 777X, an upgrade of the 777 mini-jumbo.

Korean Air plans to purchase nearly two-thirds of domestic rival Asiana for about $1.4 billion. The European Union approved the tie-up earlier this year and U.S. approval is expected by the end of October.

The 777-9, which first flew in January 2020, is now in the certification phase. Boeing has nearly 500 orders for its 777X program.
