Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) announced on Monday (Jul. 29) that Malaysia Airlines and Firefly have successfully achieved registration in the International Air Transportation Association’s (IATA) Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) as of July 2024. This marks the tenth year of registration for the Malaysian flag carrier and the first for Firefly as an IOSA-registered airline, demonstrating the Group’s adherence to IATA’s global operational safety standards. The registrations are effective immediately and valid until 2026.
The audits were conducted in January and February 2024, encompassing eight operational areas: organisation and safety management systems, flight operations, flight dispatch, aircraft engineering and maintenance, cabin operations, ground handling, cargo operations, and operational security.
“We are pleased that both Malaysia Airlines and Firefly have successfully completed the IOSA audits, reaffirming our unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest global safety standards in our operations and procedures. This milestone is particularly significant as it marks Firefly’s initial registration as an IOSA-registered airline, showcasing our continuous dedication to ensuring a safe operating environment for our organisation,” said Datuk Captain Izham Ismail, Group Managing Director of MAG.
“As safety and security are fundamental to our values, we will continue to rigorously review and enhance our processes to meet the evolving trends of the aviation industry, while ensuring that we continue to provide safe and reliable service to the global communities we serve.”
Dr. Xie Xingquan, IATA's Regional Vice President for North Asia and Asia-Pacific (ad interim), commented: “I congratulate both Malaysia Airlines and Firefly on successfully completing this very rigorous audit, demonstrating their strong commitment to safety. IOSA is making a difference in the industry. Since 2005, the accident rate of IOSA airlines is almost three times better than non-IOSA airlines. And the transition to a risk-based model makes IOSA an even more powerful tool to help airlines and regulators to maintain and improve very high levels of safety performance.”
As a new registrant, Firefly underwent the conventional audit method conducted by an IATA accredited Audit Organisation (AO), highlighting the airline’s dedication to maintaining international aviation safety and operational excellence standards.
Malaysia Airlines’ renewal registration followed a thorough Risk-Based IOSA (RBI) audit, which focuses on potential safety risks specific to each airline. This approach moves away from a one-size-fits-all methodology, providing a comprehensive evaluation of an airline’s safety systems and programmes. The audit involved employees at all levels, ensuring a holistic assessment of how safety policies and procedures are understood and implemented throughout the organisation.
Malaysia Airlines has maintained its IOSA registration since its first audit in 2005, upholding its membership in IATA and the oneworld alliance, which requires active registration for membership.
The IOSA programme is an internationally recognised evaluation system that assesses an airline’s operational management and control systems. For two decades, IOSA has set the industry benchmark in safety auditing, contributing to improved safety performance and offering extensive cost-saving measures for participating airlines.
