Malaysia Airlines has recommenced its daily direct flight from Kuala Lumpur to the Maldives, with flight MH485 departing from KL International Airport (KUL) on August 1st at 10:10 am, and arriving at Velana International Airport (MLE) at 11:25 am local time. The airline’s Boeing 737-800 aircraft operated the flight with a full capacity of 174 passengers. The return flight departs from MLE to KUL at 12:30 pm local time.
This route marks Malaysia Airlines’ 13th destination in South Asia and demonstrates the airline’s commitment to expanding its presence in key markets. The airline last operated direct flights to the Maldives in 2017. This new route aligns with Malaysia Airlines’ strategy to serve as a gateway to Asia and beyond.
Ahmad Luqman Mohd Azmi, Chief Executive Officer of Airlines from MAG, commented, “We are thrilled to be flying back to Maldives, which enhances our strategic vision of connecting travellers to some of the world’s most captivating destinations. By offering direct flights to the Maldives, we aim to position Malaysia Airlines as the top choice for those seeking both luxury and cultural richness. It also signifies a strategic initiative to solidify our standing in the luxury travel segment, showcasing our commitment to meeting the evolving needs of discerning travellers and strengthening our competitive edge in the market.”
To celebrate the new route, Malaysia Airlines is offering promotional fares until 31 August 2024, with all-in return fares starting from RM899 for Economy Class, available for travel until 30 March 2025. Travellers can also enjoy a 10% discount on ancillary bundles, including value bundles, premium bundles, and the MH Traveller’s Trio bundle, which includes a standard seat, 10kg extra baggage, and access to the Malaysia Airlines Golden Lounge at KLIA.
Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), stated, “We are pleased to welcome Malaysia Airlines back to Velana International Airport. The reinstatement of this route to Malaysia, a popular destination for our travellers, strengthens regional connectivity. We are excited about the opportunities this partnership offers.”
Ibrahim Shiuree, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Maldives Marketing & PR Corporation (MMPRC), added, “The resumption of direct flights between the Maldives and Malaysia via Malaysia Airlines is expected not only to boost arrivals but also to diversify our tourism base. Collaborative partnerships such as these underscore MMPRC’s commitment to strengthening connectivity and accessibility for our visitors from Southeast Asia and around the world.”
This year, Malaysia Airlines is also launching new routes to Chiang Mai, Thailand, starting on 15 August, and daily flights to Danang, Vietnam, beginning on 24 September 2024.
