Malaysia Eyes Kargu Loitering Munitions Acquisition

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Feb 28, 2022 - : 5:11 pm

Malaysian Armed Forces (Angkatan Tentera Malaysia – ATM) is reported to have an interest to acquire Kargu loitering munition system from a Turkish company STM (Savunma Teknolojileri Mühendislik ve Ticaret A.Ş.).

Also known as “kamikaze drone”, STM has offered its Kargu loitering munition system to the ATM recently. The Kargu system is a man-portable quadcopter drone loaded with 1.3 kg of explosives and equipped with Artificial Intelligence (AI)-backed facial recognition ability.

According to the company, the Kargu loitering munition is “capable of performing fully autonomous navigation vis STM’s unique flight control system. In addition, the platform is able to perform precision strike(s) for low signature, beyond line of sight targets.” and that it is also capable of striking both static and moving targets during day and night conditions.

The company believes that its Kargu loitering munition is a highly efficient and cost-effective tool which can be deployed singly or in a group (swarm) in situations ranging from counter-insurgency to counter artillery as well as destruction of enemy’s air defense operations.

To-date, Kargu drones have been exported to Azerbaijan and have been deployed during the recent Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

While no further information has been released regarding the ATM interest in this system, STM has also offered local assembly of the drone similar to the collaboration between Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) to Malaysian DEFTECH in assembling Anka UAV.
