Malaysia Eyes Su-57, KF-21 for MRCA Programme

The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) is reportedly exploring the potential procurement of Russia’s Sukhoi Su-57 (NATO: Felon) or South Korea’s Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) KF-21 Boramae for the service’s Multi Role Combat Aircraft (MRCA) programme.

Previously, the RMAF had considered European options such as the Eurofighter Typhoon, Dassault Rafale, and SAAB JAS-39E Gripen, along with the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet from the United States. However, recent adjustments to the programme have sidelined these candidates on the grounds that they are 4.5th generation fighters, which have been in service for over two decades.

Furthermore, Boeing’s 2023 announcement to cease production of the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet in 2025 has also influenced the programme’s direction, prompting the RMAF to seek alternative sources for its next MRCA.

As an interim measure, the RMAF is considering the acquisition of up to 33 ex-Kuwaiti Air Force (KAF) F-18C/D Hornets to supplement the eight similar aircraft currently in service. The RMAF also plans to upgrade its existing fleet of 18 Sukhoi Su-30MKM (NATO: Flanker) combat jets to a level comparable to the Su-35, the most advanced variant of the type.

However, the potential acquisition of the Su-57 is not without its risks. While the Su-57 is operational with the Russian Air Force, concerns remain regarding its availability for export due to the manufacturer’s limited production output. Additionally, Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine poses further complications, potentially affecting Malaysia’s reputation and delivery timelines if the conflict persists.

These factors may position the KAI KF-21 as a more favourable option for the RMAF’s MRCA programme. The RMAF has already ordered 18 FA-50M light fighter/trainer aircraft from KAI, with the possibility of acquiring 18 more. KAI’s recent announcement to commence mass production of the KF-21 this year followed by planned deliveries starting in 2026, could also strengthens the case for the KF-21.

It should be noted, however, that the initial production variant of the KF-21 is classified as a 4.5th generation aircraft. The jet’s development roadmap aims to achieve a full 5th generation stealth capability, which could be a decisive factor if the RMAF strictly requires a 5th generation aircraft.
