Malaysian Army to Receive Additional 81 mm Mortar Systems

Our Bureau - : May 7, 2024 - : 12:43 am

The Malaysian Army is set to bolster its arsenal with additional mortar systems following previous acquisitions from Spain. In 2022, the army acquired 72 Expal M86 81 mm mortars equipped with the Talos Fire Control System, followed by another delivery for an additional 48 mortar systems in 2023.

The 2023 delivery also included 48 domestically-produced Cendana Auto MT-815 4×4 mortar transporters, supplementing the 72 units received in 2022. These vehicles serve the dual purpose of transporting the weapon and its crew, complete with up to seventy 81 mm mortar rounds.

Specifics regarding the exact quantity and manufacturer of the forthcoming mortar systems remain undisclosed. However, reports indicate that around 24 of these light artillery systems could be part of the upcoming acquisition. It is worth noting that since 2022, the Spanish company Expal has merged into Rheinmetall Expal Munitions, potentially influencing the manufacturer of the forthcoming delivery.

Likewise, an equal number of MT-815 mortar transporters may also be ordered for the upcoming delivery of the new mortars.

In addition to the Expal M86, the Malaysian Army’s 81 mm mortar arsenal currently features the British-Canadian L16 and South Africa’s Denel Vektor M8. While these infantry-portable light artillery weapons boast comparable performance, with a maximum effective firing range between 6 to 7 km, the integration of the Talos Fire Control System into the Malaysian Army’s newest 81 mm mortars is expected to enhance accuracy and effectiveness.
