Malaysian Navy Commander Visits Indonesian Shipbuilding Firm

Our Bureau - : May 5, 2024 - : 7:19 pm

In what might appear as a step toward the announcement of the winning bid, the Commander of the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN), Admiral Tan Sri Abdul Rahman bin Ayob, embarked on a visit to PT PAL in Surabaya, Indonesia last month.

The Malaysian admiral and his accompanying delegation received a warm welcome from PT PAL Indonesia’s senior management and were briefed on the company’s operations. Subsequently, they toured the shipyard to observe the ongoing shipbuilding activities.

The Indonesian state-owned shipyard stands as one of the largest shipbuilding firms in the republic, renowned for producing a diverse range of vessels, including the Makassar-class Landing Platform Docks (LPDs) for the Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL) and the Tarlac-class LPDs for the Philippine Navy.

The Indonesian state-owned shipyard is also one of the contenders for the RMN’s MRSS acquisition plan with its 163 metres, 12,500 tonnes displacement LPD design developed from Makassar-class LPD.

This design has also been selected by the United Arab Emirates for the country’s navy LPD acquisition program in 2022.

The Royal Malaysian Navy is presently refining its procurement strategy for MRSS as part of the 15 to 5 Transformation Plan.
