In a discussion with Dato’ Sri Mohd Nizam Bin Kasa, the Managing Director of MILDEF International Technologies, Malaysia, Yulian Ardiansyah from Daily News explored the company’s entry in the Philippines’ defence sector. With the ASEAN region at the forefront of their strategy, Dato’ Sri Mohd Nizam emphasised the burgeoning opportunities for collaboration in manufacturing advanced military vehicles, aligning with local industry needs.
As Mildef showcases its innovative technologies, the focus remains on fostering partnerships that bolster the Philippines’ defence capabilities. The conversation reveals not only the company’s commitment to understanding the specific requirements of the region but also its proactive approach to addressing challenges faced by foreign manufacturers in tropical climates.
What can you share about Mildef’s presence in the Philippines, including any plans for future collaboration or ongoing partnerships?
“Within ASEAN cooperation, we see significant opportunities in the defence industry, particularly in the manufacturing of armoured vehicles.”
“We’ve already established several collaborative programmes with local industries in the Philippines, and we are showcasing some of our vehicles here. There are several variants and models that are already in demand, and we see good potential in the Philippines. That’s why we’ve come to collaborate with KOPES (a local organisation), and we hope to share this technology.”
Could you tell me a bit about the vehicle being showcased here?
“The vehicle we’ve brought today is the High Mobility Light Tactical Vehicle (HMLTV). If we look at the terrain and climate in Asia, a vehicle like this is better suited for such environments. It’s lightweight but offers strong protection, up to level 2. It weighs around 8 tonnes and is designed for use by the police, military, and for reconnaissance purposes.”
How has the interest been from those visiting the MILDEF booth?
“All praise to God, so far, the response has been very positive because the vehicle model we are proposing meets the requirements of the Philippines. If we look at other OEMs (original equipment manufacturers), there may be challenges, but our advantage lies in after-sales service, as we are located relatively close to the Philippines. This is crucial, especially for issues related to tropical climates.”
“We understand tropical issues well. Western vehicles, especially those from Europe, often face difficulties with tropical climates. That’s why, after being tested in the Philippines, this vehicle has proven to be suitable for use here. It’s also developed in Malaysia for Southeast Asian climates like ours.”
If a deal is finalised for procurement in the Philippines, how do you envision the cooperation between your company and local counterparts?
“We already have counterparts here who will handle after-sales service. If the procurement numbers are substantial, we also plan to transfer some of the production components here because I believe every country prioritises its local industry. Collaboration between our company and local companies will be our main focus.”
