More Trouble for Boeing: Some 787 Dreamliners Grounded with Fuselage Issues

: Sep 1, 2020 - : 5:39 pm

Boeing, which has been badly hit by the continued grounding of its bestselling 737 Max aircraft,  is facing more trouble. The plane maker has identified a problem with the manufacturing of the 787 Dreamliner,  leading to the grounding of eight of the planes.

The company said in a recent statement that eight of the planes will be grounded for inspection of how parts of the fuselage were joined together,  and repair.

“Boeing has identified two distinct manufacturing issues in the join of certain 787 aft body fuselage sections, which, in combination, result in a condition that does not meet our design standards,” said the company’s statement. The company said that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been “fully briefed,” and was aware of the problem with the 787.

The Air Current, which broke the story, reported that the eight aircraft belong to United Air Lines , Air Canada and Singapore Airlines.  About 1,000 787s that have been delivered to 69  airlines worldwide since it first flew in 2012. Boeing recently said that in view of the ongoing pandemic, it would slow production of the Dreamliner and was considering closing one of the two plants that build the plane.

It may be recalled that the Dreamliner was grounded for three months in 2013 after battery meltdowns. The single-aisle 737 Max has been grounded since March 2019 and is awaiting approval to fly again.
