Naval Group Collaborates with Thales and KNDS on MPLS

At Euronaval 2024, French shipbuilder Naval Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Thales and KNDS to collaborate on the development of a multi-purpose and modular launching system (MPLS). This new system aims to improve operational flexibility by integrating a variety of munitions into a single adaptable platform.

The MPLS departs from traditional systems by offering interchangeable ammunition modules that can be reconfigured based on operational requirements. It can deploy a wide range of effectors, such as rockets, missiles, grenades, underwater weapons, decoys, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), providing a cost-effective solution to address diverse threats.

With a payload capacity of around 1,000 kilograms, the system can be fitted with one or more turrets, each of which can be equipped with different types of weapons. The turret’s two-axis movement allows it to target and engage manoeuvring threats, and it can function independently or be connected to the ship’s combat system. The system offers logistical and training efficiencies, providing both economic and operational advantages.

The development of the MPLS also marks a shift in how product development and marketing are approached, with Naval Group working alongside its partners to integrate various ammunition types based on operational needs. Thales will provide 70 and 68 mm rockets and Lightweight Multi-role Missiles (LMM), while KNDS will contribute a range of innovative munitions. Additionally, discussions with MBDA are ongoing to incorporate Mistral and Akeron family missiles into the system.
