New aircraft tracking rules

: May 15, 2014 - : 7:56 am

Following the mysterious disappearance of the Malaysian Airlines flight MH370, India has asked all airlines in the country to track their aircraft real-time from take-off to landing.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the country’s aviation regulator, on May 6 issued fresh guidelines demanding Indian carriers and private jet operators to continuously remain connected with their aircraft through one of two airborne technologies – the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System, or ACARS or the Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast, or ADS-B, in case ACARS is disabled.

The ACARS and ADS-B will automatically detect and report changes to the flight phases – out of the gate, off the ground, on the ground and into the gate, DGCA official Prabhat Kumar says.

It will also enable “interface with Flight Management System (FMS) for communication of flight plans and weather information from the ground station,” facilitating the flight crew to examine new weather conditions and consider alternative flight plans.

The air traffic operators have been told to ensure their serviceability before every departure of the flight.
