Nexter, a member company of KNDS, has recently achieved qualification for its new SHARD 120mm APFSDS ammunition in late 2023. The new ammunition represents an advancement in firepower – with around +15% penetration – offering enhanced capabilities to counter modern MBT and future threats while reducing barrel wear by 25%.
Designed to improve the 120mm APFSDS tungsten alloy ammunition performance, SHARD also has been tested to have a muzzle velocity of 1720 m/s on the Leclerc’s L52 gun and 1734 m/s on the Leopard 2’s L55 gun.
SHARD is compatible with all NATO 120mm smoothbore tanks, including Leclerc, Leopard 2, M1 Abrams, Ariete, and Centauro 2, adhering to Stanag 4583 and Interface Control Document 120 (ICD120) standards. This compatibility offers operational, logistic, and economic advantages, streamlining ammunition usage across various gun systems.
A demonstration for Leclerc and Leopard 2 users showcased SHARD’s performance increase, validated through successful firing tests on semi-infinite RHA targets in Alcochete, Portugal, in late 2023.
SHARD, after being declared ready for mass production, is now being offered for sale with contract negotiations and demonstrations ongoing with several countries in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
KNDS, formed from the partnership between Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Nexter in 2015, is actively developing the Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) and the Common Indirect Fire System (CIFS) for future military land systems.
