Northrop Grumman unsheathes its SABR (SINGAPORE AIRSHOW 2014 – DAY 2)

: Feb 13, 2014 - : 8:39 pm

Pride of place in Northrop Grumman’s line-up is its Scalable Agile Beam Radar (SABR). This active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar is being marketed as a low-risk retrofit for F-16 fighters worldwide. Of course, this is highly relevant to Singapore, which will be performing a midlife upgrade (MLU) on its 60-strong F-16C/D fleet, as notified late last year.

Competition is heating up for this programme, with BAE Systems offering its upgrade expertise to Singapore as well. Of course, SABR has its own competitor in the form of the Raytheon Advanced Combat Radar (RACR), which was earlier selected by South Korea. On the other hand, both the US Air Force (USAF) and Republic of China Air Force (ROCAF) both selected SABR.

In early February, Northrop Grumman announced that SABR had completed three major development and design reviews. Several engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) systems are in production, with the first to reach Lockheed Martin’s hands later in 2014.
