Our Bureau - : Oct 25, 2024 - : 2:28 am

Türkiye’s Özen İş Makina products are a vital cog in the wheel for many of the country’s defence products. The company, which was set up in 1980, is the first Turkish firm to receive the AS 9100 certificate in the defence and aviation sector.

The firm, which designs and manufactures moulds, machines and mechanical parts for sectors such as glass, automotive, energy and machinery, has had defence and aviation as one of its main focus areas over the last decade. Mechanical parts and mechanisms produced by the company are used by a number of big names in the Turkish defence industry, including Roketsan, Aselsan, BMC, MKE, TUSAŞ, and TEI.

The company which designs and manufactures packaging, sorting, ranking, mechanical, robotic machines and systems within the scope of Industry 4.0, exports about 40 percent of its production to countries such as the United States, UAE, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Italy. According to Pınar Özozan Okyay, Özen İş Makina General Manager, the company is now focused on exporting parts it produces to international defence companies.

The company supplies mechanical parts to a number of major Turkish defence platforms. They include Makina Kimya’s 120-81 mortars, the weapon systems of the Altay and Fırtına tanks, Boran, the weapon system of Roketsan’s Atmaca system, Cirit and Hisar projects, BMC’s Tank Carrier project, Kirpi and Howitzer projects, TUSAŞ ’s Kaan project, and TEI’s national engine project.

Okyay is the only woman on the board of SAHA Istanbul, which is the largest cluster in Türkiye and Europe. The cluster has over 1,200 member companies from 45 cities, including Aselsan, Turkish Aerospace, Roketsan, STM, ASFAT, Military Shipyards, and Baykar. The cluster’s activities are supported by 29 universities within it, including ITU, YTU, Sabancı University, and all institutes of TÜBİTAK (The Scientific and Technologies Research Council of Türkiye). The cluster aims to enhance university-industry collaboration and ensure a steady stream of qualified personnel for the domestic aerospace and defence industry.
