Philippine Navy Receives Two Additional Acero-Class Patrol Vessels

: Sep 26, 2024 - : 11:50 pm

The Philippine Fleet (PF) announced on Monday the delivery of two additional fast attack interdiction craft (FAIC), also known as Acero-class patrol vessels, to the country. The vessels arrived at Pier 15 of the Manila South Harbor on September 17.

PF spokesperson Lieutenant Giovanni Badidles confirmed the delivery, stating, “These two FAICs, to be designated with bow numbers PG-908 and PG-909, will be the seventh and the eighth fast boats under the Acero-class patrol vessels.” Following the commissioning of these new vessels, the total number of FAICs in the Philippine Navy (PN) will increase to eight, with one more still to be delivered by contractor Israeli Shipyards Ltd.

According to Badidles, “Similar to their predecessors, the newly delivered platforms are designed for high-speed operations, featuring advanced missile systems and sophisticated onboard technology, which enhances the PN’s capability to conduct rapid and effective maritime interdiction operations.” He added that the arrival of these vessels highlights the ongoing modernisation of the PN and is a significant step towards strengthening Manila’s Self-Reliant Defense Posture (SRDP) programme.

Earlier this year, on May 22, the PN formally commissioned its fifth and sixth FAICs, named BRP Herminigildo Yurong (PG-906) and BRP Laurence Narag (PG-907). Both of these vessels are equipped with Spike NLOS (non-line of sight) missile systems. The PN received the two gunboats from Israel Shipyards Ltd. on November 18, 2023.

The vessels honour two Medal of Valor awardees, the late Marine Staff Sergeant Herminigildo Yurong and Marine Corporal Laurence Narag, who lost their lives during the Philippine government’s campaign against Moro rebels in Mindanao in 2000.

The first two Acero-class gunboats, BRP Nestor Acero (PG-901) and BRP Lolinato To-Ong (PG-902), were delivered in September 2022 and were commissioned two months later. The third and fourth FAICs, BRP Gener Tinangag (PG-903) and BRP Domingo Deluana (PG-905), were delivered in April 2023 and commissioned the following month.

Among the nine vessels, four will be equipped with NLOS missiles that have pinpoint accuracy and a range of 25 km, while the remaining five will be fitted with Typhoon-mounted 30mm main cannons and .50 calibre heavy machine guns.
