Philippine Navy to Acquire New Dry Docks

: Sep 13, 2024 - : 7:35 pm

During a recent Congressional hearing on the Department of National Defense’s (DND) budget for fiscal year 2025, Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro reported on the plans from the Philippine Navy to enhance its fleet support infrastructure.

The Navy intends to acquire two new floating dry docks to accommodate its expanding fleet. According to a report released by the Philippine Navy, the first dry dock will have a 3,500-tonne capacity, designed to service smaller vessels. This facility is expected to improve the service’s maintenance and repair capabilities, ensuring smaller ships remain fully operational.

The second dry dock, with a larger 8,000-tonne capacity, will be used for the maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) of the Navy’s capital ships. This acquisition is seen as a strategic move to maintain the operational readiness of larger vessels, which are vital to the Navy’s core functions.

In addition to the dry docks, the Philippine Navy also plans to procure other critical equipment, including boat lifts, floating cranes, shipbuilding tools, harbour cranes, synchro lifts, and additional tugboats to enhance its shipyard capacity.

The Philippine Navy currently operates smaller dry docks and floating cranes, some of which have been recently modernised. However, the new acquisitions will allow for wider distribution across more locations, expanding the Navy’s ability to maintain its fleet across various points. These developments are a step towards enhancing the Navy’s maintenance and limited shipbuilding capabilities.
