Philippine Navy to Revive Domestic Naval Shipbuilding

Yulian Ardiansyah - : May 4, 2024 - : 6:28 pm

The Philippine Navy (PN) is in the process of reviving the country’s naval shipbuilding industry, said the service’s spokesperson WPS Commodore Roy Vincent Trinidad. This decision stems from a government directive, as relayed by the Department of National Defense (DND), which aims to exclusively procure domestically-produced warships in the future.

“The Defense department says very strongly that we will no longer buy ships from abroad because to sustain them is more expensive than their cost. It is better for the economy to build our own ships,” he said as quoted by the Daily Tribune recently.

“So, part of the effort of the Defense department is to spur the development of the local industry,” he added.

He mentioned that the Philippines had developed a couple of warships in the 1980s, but there was no continuation thereafter. To revive this industry, Trinidad further stated that the Philippine Navy will soon begin training its personnel in shipbuilding.

While the timeframe for the revival of the Philippine’s domestic naval industry has yet to be specified, it is evident that this project will take at least several years to yield results. Moreover, the country’s National Steel Corporation (NSC) in Iligan, North Mindanao, once regarded as the largest steel mill in Asia, was liquidated in 2000 following severe impacts from the Asian financial crisis in 1997 and formally declared defunct in 2009.

Efforts have been made to reopen the company, with the latest attempt in 2018 by the Iligan City Government. However, it appears that no significant progress has been made towards this plan.
